Mental health: a silent crisis that affects urban security across Europe

Reflecting our member local and regional authorities’ growing concerns, we have recently included mental health as a new area of work. As such, we are developing exchanges among our members across Europe,
|
|
|
|
garnering knowledge and promoting initiatives to prevent or mitigate the impact of poor mental health on urban security. We are also partners in a new EU-funded project, Respect to Protect, which seeks to train protection and security professionals to ensure dignified and respectful treatment of mental health problems. Partnership with the LUCI network on urban lighting: new opportunities for our members
|
|
Efus signed a partnership agreement with the LUCI network, which brings together 70 cities from around the world to discuss issues relating to urban lighting. The two networks will work together on
|
|
|
|
topics such as the protection of public spaces and the role of lighting in enhancing citizens’ safety and feeling of safety. The agreement was signed by Elizabeth Johnston, Efus Executive Director, and Fatiha El Moudni, President of LUCI and Mayor of Rabat (Morocco).

Bridging the gap between citizens and security technology developers
|
|
For the past three years, Efus has been a partner in the EU-funded TRANSCEND project, whose aim is to foster closer cooperation between citizens and security technology developers. Efus has led a pilot scheme, coordinated a group of associate cities
|

In practice: the Alice scheme assisting victims of sexual harassment or violence in Brussels
|
|
In light of the number of incidents of sexual violence around the campus of the Catholic University of Leuven in Brussels, the local police set up the Alice scheme to inform students and assist victims.

Benefit from a free training in artificial intelligence applied to urban security
|
|
Efus has partnered with Google to offer to 175 local officials and elected representatives from six European
|
|
|
|
countries a tailored training in the use of artificial intelligence in urban security. Two series of sessions have already been held in France and Spain, with a second one in France opening after the summer, to be followed in 2026 by Belgium, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. This project is funded by the Center for Public Impact (CPI) with support from the Google.org AI Opportunity Fund.
