Police and citizens: the essential task of strengthening mutual trust

Citizens need to trust their police to be and feel secure in their city, and police need to know the population and earn their trust to work efficiently and serenely. This is why bringing police and citizens closer is a priority for

many European local and regional authorities, who are responsible for local police. Our 2025 manifesto includes practical recommendations on how to foster peaceful and healthy mutual relations and ensure that local police are adequately trained and supported. (Photo: iStock - Francesco Cantone)

Current projects on improving policing
Efus is working on several projects that tackle the role of police in urban security. One of them is the new EU-POLNET network of European local forces. We are also partners in two EU-funded projects: KOBAN on community policing, and PACTESUR 2 on the protection of public spaces, which includes police academies 👇

New European Commission: an enduring partnership with Efus

The European Commission, which is the European Union’s executive body, is a key partner of Efus. Resulting from the European parliamentary elections in June, the new Commission was appointed

in November for a mandate running until 31 October 2029. Efus has always been in regular contact with cabinet members of Commissioners who work in policy areas that are relevant to us, such as Migration and Home Affairs; Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law, and Crisis management. We are looking forward to meeting the new cabinet officials to discuss our members' priorities on issues of urban security.
