Drawing big crowds in open public spaces, Christmas markets pose a tricky security challenge for local authorities. The same goes for New Year's Eve and other holiday season festivities. How to ensure people are safe and free to roam without generating anxiety through heavy policing or surveillance? Many of our member local and regional authorities are busy doing just that this month, working in partnership with local and national police forces, emergency services, civil society and private partners such as transport companies, SMEs and businesses.

Efus calls for a coalition of European cities and regions to face the drugs crisis
Gathered in Cologne, Germany, on 5 December, Efus' Executive Committee adopted a resolution calling for the creation of a "coalition of 50 European cities and regions that would work together to strengthen and promote their local policies against drug-related violence and harm and demonstrate concrete results." Its main objective will be to implement and demonstrate 50 local strategies to prevent and combat such violence and harm. Efus will seek the support of the European Union to get this project up and running, notably the European Union Drugs Agency.
Hosted by the Mayor of Cologne, Henriette Reker (at the centre of the picture, with a dark blue blazer), the meeting was attended by Efus President and Mayor of Liège, Willy Demeyer (fourth from the left), Efus Executive Director, Elizabeth Johnston (third from the left), as well as representatives from Efus' Vice-President cities and regions and Executive Committee members.
