Efus wishes you all the best for 2023!

2022 has been a year full of inspiration and exchanges. 2022 gathered once again our historical members and partners. 2022 welcomed new friends on board, bringing new ideas, new thrills and new challenges. 2022 has sadly also been marked by the war in Ukraine, at the gates of the European Union. Cities and their citizens are standing in solidarity with Ukraine, welcoming refugees and setting up all sorts of support schemes. It reminds us that peace and security are precious and fragile. Without security, there cannot be democracy; this is one of Efus’ most fundamental principles.

Our work to constantly promote security as a democratic good based on social cohesion and the respect of fundamental rights is our way to promote peace in our cities. It has inspired us ever since Efus was established 35 years ago, and it will inspire us in everything we do in 2023.

Because we firmly believe in cities helping cities, let’s continue to work together in 2023 and bring ever more inspiring exchanges and mutual support for a sustainable and safe future in European cities and territories, and beyond!

We wish you a happy holiday season and our best wishes for a peaceful new year!

2022 Highlights

Organised crime

In the face of the multifaceted challenge posed by organised crime at the local level, Efus local and regional authorities adopted a resolution calling on more political, financial and legislative support from national and European institutions.

Climate change

Environmental threats and concerns are on the rise at the global level, generating growing interlinkages between security and climate. To support local authorities in taking on these new challenges, Efus created a new working group on climate change.

Protection of public spaces

Efus’ local and regional authorities stand together to advocate for more institutional support to make public spaces safer while preserving their inherent openness and inclusiveness. This culminated in the adoption of the Brussels Declaration during the final conference of the four-year EU-funded PACTESUR project on the protection of public spaces, led by the city of Nice (France) and in which Efus was a partner.

We have summarised in a book the main insights we have drawn from this project.

Advocacy

2022 was a rich year of advocacy with European institutions, with the EU Summit of Regions and Cities in Marseille; meetings with the Congress of local and regional authorities in Strasbourg; the European Council Meeting in Prague; and the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels.
