Protecting public spaces

Efus organised the final conference of its Secu4All project on the prevention and management of risks affecting public spaces, as part of the 28th German Prevention Congress in the City of Mannheim.

Gathering various crime prevention and security stakeholders from all over Europe, the conference focused on how we can better anticipate and respond to security threats in public spaces, and the challenges and tools available to promote citizens' participation in securing and managing public spaces.

It also offered an interesting angle on the challenges linked to monitoring and evaluating safety and crime prevention in public spaces with an introduction to the Urban Safety Monitor and a Global Goals perspective.

Building a common culture of the security of public spaces

Through the Secu4All project, Efus and its partners contributed to reinforcing the capacities of local stakeholders involved in the management of public spaces who are as diverse as are their competences and the risks and threats likely to impact public spaces.

The gendered approach to security

How to include the gender perspective in the evaluation of and response to feelings of insecurity?

This is what Efus, through its Women in Cities Initiative (WICI) and its partners in the BeSecure-FeelSecure European project led by the city of Piraeus (Greece), tried to tackle by organising an exploratory walk in the municipality of Les Lilas.

>> Read our interview with Barbara Holtmann, associate expert, about the added value of exploratory satefy walks with women:

"A safety walk aims to have us attach conscious meaning to our experiences. [...] Some of the risks and discomforts identified [...] can quite easily be addressed by routine action by the municipality, changing the nature of a particular space from feeling unsafe to being welcoming and safe."

Re-thinking, re-engineering and adapting tools and methodologies

Efus and its partners in the IcARUS project will meet on 4-5 July in Paris for a workshop. The project's six associated cities will present the tools they have developed to tackle their priority urban security issues.

A growing network: 24 new members in 2022-23

Efus members gathered in Mannheim for the network's General Assembly to review last year's activities and set the priority work areas for the medium term. We are delighted to have welcomed 24 new member cities and regions (including from new countries!) in our network between June 2022 and June 2023!

Another highlight was the election of Efus' Executive Committee. Congratulations to the reelected members and a warm welcome to two new members: the city of Gyöngyös (Hungary) and the Brussels-Capital Region (Belgium)!
